IS COLLEGE BRINGING UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES?
Although college can bring exciting opportunities socially, academically, and professionally, it can also bring mental health, substance, and relationship difficulties. Depression, anxiety, suicide, eating disorders, and addiction are the top mental health challenges facing students. One in five college students experience sexual assault during college (White House Task Force to Protect Students, 2014). And for many students, college becomes the ground upon which drug experimentation and alcohol use increase. Handling these intense situations and emotional difficulties can be extremely difficult when you are also handling the daily challenges of attending college.
You may be finding that managing academics and balancing your social life is becoming more difficult. As grades fall, it might be tempting to withdraw further from classes and allow socializing to take over. You may be facing dilemmas in your personal life or difficult life events that are interfering with your ability to concentrate and complete your work.
Sometimes having a safe person to talk to is the most helpful thing you can do for yourself. If you are feeling overwhelmed, alone, or in crisis, contact us at Alkira. We have worked with college students for over 20 years. Our diverse, compassionate staff provides comprehensive services for you, and we have established resources in the community that can supplement your counseling if needed. Our approach is focused on your needs and strengths. We are culturally informed, safe space therapists and we use brief, CBT, EFT, and narrative practices. We will work with you, you and your partner, or you and your family-it is up to you.
